Dubai to Fujairah: East Coast Beaches & Snoopy Island
Fujairah is the UAE’s other coast — the one that faces the Gulf of Oman rather than the Arabian Gulf. Getting there means driving clean through the Hajar Mountains, and the reward is calmer water, real snorkelling, and a shoreline that feels a generation removed from Dubai’s.
The drive across the mountains
The route from Dubai heads east and then threads through the Hajar range before dropping to the coast — roughly 130 km and around 1.5–2 hours. The mountain section is the good part: bare rock walls, sweeping curves and, after rare rain, wadis running with water. The road is paved throughout, so any car copes, but the scenery suits something you enjoy driving.
Standard UAE rules apply: automatic Salik gates (AED 4 per pass) on the Dubai side, cheap fuel and plenty of stations, and camera-enforced speed limits. Carry water, especially in summer, and leave early to have the beaches to yourself before day-trippers arrive.
Snoopy Island and snorkelling
The signature stop sits off the coast near Al Aqah — a rocky islet whose profile is said to resemble the cartoon dog lying on his back. What matters is what is around it: reef, tropical fish, turtles and reasonable visibility, all reachable by snorkel from the beach or a short paddle out. It is one of the most accessible snorkelling spots in the country, and gear can be hired locally if you did not bring your own.
Stay aware of currents, keep an eye on children in the water, and give the reef and marine life plenty of space. Mornings tend to bring calmer, clearer water.
Two good options. An SUV handles the mountain crossing, carries snorkel gear and coolers, and lets you nose down the rougher beach tracks. If it is just two of you and the weather is kind, a convertible turns the coastal stretch into the highlight — roof down along the Gulf of Oman is hard to beat.
Al Bidyah Mosque — the oldest in the UAE
A short way up the coast stands Al Bidyah Mosque, widely regarded as the oldest in the country. It is tiny — a single small chamber under four squat domes supported by one central pillar, built of stone and mud brick. Its simplicity is the point; after the grand mosques of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, this humble, centuries-old structure on a quiet hillside is quietly moving. Dress modestly if you go inside.
Fujairah Fort and town
Inland, Fujairah Fort is one of the oldest and largest in the UAE, restored on a low hill overlooking the old town and date plantations. The surrounding heritage area gives a sense of pre-oil coastal life. It is a good midday stop — a little history and shade between beach sessions.
Beaches and the wider east coast
The Al Aqah stretch has the resorts and the easiest access, but the whole east coast rewards exploring: quiet public beaches, fishing harbours, and calmer, cooler water than the west. Diving is popular here too, thanks to the reefs and the occasional wreck. This coast is also the gateway to the mountain-and-sea towns further north — our Khor Fakkan and Kalba guide covers the tunnel road, the waterfall and the mangroves just up the shore.
Turning it into a loop
Rather than driving back the way you came, many people make Fujairah part of a larger circuit through the mountains and along the coast. If that appeals, see our mountain-to-coast loop, which ties the wadis, the Masafi market and the east-coast beaches into one satisfying round trip. For a mountain-first day instead, Hatta is the natural companion.
FAQ
How far is Fujairah from Dubai?
About 130 km and roughly 1.5–2 hours, most of the interest coming from the mountain crossing in the middle.
Can you really snorkel at Snoopy Island?
Yes. It is one of the UAE’s most accessible snorkelling spots, with reef fish and turtles reachable from the beach. Watch the currents and mind children in the water.
Do I need a 4×4 for Fujairah?
No — the roads are paved the whole way. An SUV is handy for gear and beach tracks; a convertible is lovely for the coast if the weather is right.
Is Fujairah worth an overnight stay?
It can be. There are beach resorts along the Al Aqah stretch, and staying over lets you combine snorkelling, diving and the towns further north without rushing.
