Abu Dhabi to Sir Bani Yas Island: Wildlife & Wilderness

Sir Bani Yas is not somewhere you stumble upon — it takes a long, quiet drive west of Abu Dhabi and then a short ferry across the water. What waits at the end is unlike anywhere else in the UAE: a natural island turned wildlife reserve, where Arabian oryx, giraffes and cheetahs roam across open land you explore on a safari drive of your own.

The long drive west

The island sits off the coast in the Al Dhafra region, and the drive from Abu Dhabi to the Jebel Dhanna jetty is around 250 km — roughly two and a half to three hours on the fast, well-built E11 heading west toward the Saudi border. It is a proper long-haul UAE drive: wide, straight highway, big skies, and the desert stretching out on either side.

Because it is a long day at the wheel, the car matters more than the destination might suggest. You want a comfortable, well-cooled SUV that eats highway kilometres without fatigue, with the boot space for a day out or an overnight bag. Fuel is cheap and stations line the E11, so plan a coffee-and-refuel stop and enjoy the emptiness.

Best car for this drive

A long, fast western highway calls for a refined, spacious SUV — cool cabin, easy cruising, room for luggage. It makes 250 km each way feel like part of the adventure rather than a chore.

Crossing to the island

You cannot drive onto Sir Bani Yas itself. From the Jebel Dhanna jetty, a short ferry carries guests across to the island — the crossing is quick, and the resorts on the island coordinate the transfer for their guests. Day visits are also possible through arranged experiences. Park up on the mainland, cross the water, and the pace changes completely.

The Arabian Wildlife Park

The heart of Sir Bani Yas is the Arabian Wildlife Park, which covers a large share of the island. This began decades ago as a conservation vision by the late Sheikh Zayed, who set out to rewild the island and protect the Arabian oryx — a species that was once extinct in the wild. Today the results are extraordinary.

You explore by nature and wildlife drive, on foot on guided walks, by mountain bike or on horseback — and because the animals move freely across a genuinely large landscape, it feels far more like a wilderness than a zoo. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to see the animals active and the light at its softest.

Beyond the wildlife

The island is more than its animals. Sir Bani Yas is geologically striking, formed around salt domes that give it hills, cliffs and a surprisingly varied terrain. There are archaeological remains here too, including the site of an early Christian monastery, one of the oldest such finds in the region — a reminder of how long people have crossed these waters.

Accommodation is handled by the Anantara resorts on the island, which range from beachfront to tented-style desert lodges, and they organise the safaris, kayaking through mangroves and other activities. It is set up for a slow, immersive stay rather than a rushed visit, which suits the effort of getting there.

How to make it work

Pair it with the wider west

The Al Dhafra region is the UAE’s great empty quarter, and Sir Bani Yas sits well alongside its other landscapes. For the epic dunes further inland, read Abu Dhabi to Liwa. If you are building up to the long western drive, our Dubai to Abu Dhabi road trip covers the first leg, and families planning a bigger loop will want the 7-seater family guide.

FAQ

How far is Sir Bani Yas from Abu Dhabi?

About 250 km to the Jebel Dhanna jetty — roughly two and a half to three hours west on the E11 — then a short ferry to the island.

Can I drive my rental car onto the island?

No. You park on the mainland at Jebel Dhanna and cross by ferry. The island’s resorts coordinate the transfer and on-island transport.

Is it a zoo or a real reserve?

It is a genuine wildlife reserve. Animals roam freely across a large natural landscape, and you see them on safari-style drives rather than in enclosures.

Should I visit as a day trip?

It is better as an overnight stay. The round-trip drive is around 500 km, so an overnight lets you enjoy the wildlife drives at dawn and dusk without rushing.
