When to Drive in the UAE: A Season-by-Season Guide
The UAE has one glorious driving season and one demanding one, with a few quirks in between. Knowing what the road feels like month by month lets you plan trips that are comfortable, safe and beautifully timed.
The UAE really has two: a long, mild winter and a fierce summer. The shoulder weeks either side are warm and pleasant. Every road trip in this series is easier and more enjoyable in the cooler half of the year, but with the right car and a bit of sense you can drive well all year round.
Winter (October to April): prime time
This is the season the whole calendar bends towards. Daytime temperatures are comfortable, evenings can be genuinely cool, and the light is clear and warm — perfect for everything from mountain switchbacks to desert dunes to coastal cruises. The trade-off is popularity: weekends at Hatta, Jebel Jais and the east coast beaches get busy, so set off early. Summer (June to September): heat strategy
Summer is intense — daytime temperatures regularly climb past 45°C and humidity on the coast is heavy. You can still have a great time; you just plan differently:
- Front-load the day. Drive early morning or after sunset, and keep midday for indoor, air-conditioned destinations — malls, museums, Abu Dhabi’s indoor theme parks.
- Favour short drives over marathon road trips. Save the long hauls for winter.
- Night desert. The dunes are magic after dark when the sand has cooled — a proper 4×4 and company are essential.
- Mind your AC and tyres. Heat is hard on cars. A well-maintained rental with strong air-conditioning matters more than ever, and tyre pressures rise in the heat.

Treat morning fog seriously: drop your speed, use low-beam headlights and fog lights, never use full beam (it reflects back at you), leave a big gap, and avoid unnecessary lane changes.
