Drive the desert from October to April. In summer the sand and the air are brutal — surface temperatures soar, and a breakdown in 45°C-plus heat is dangerous, not just uncomfortable. Even in the cooler months, go in the late afternoon: the light is better for photos, the temperature is kinder, and the low sun reveals the shape of the dunes so you can read the terrain.
Avoid the middle of the day, watch for sandstorms that flatten visibility, and always carry plenty of water regardless of season.
Reading the sand
Momentum is your friend and hesitation is your enemy. Keep a steady, committed speed, point straight up and down dune faces rather than across them, and never crest a dune blind — you cannot see what is on the other side, and steep drop-offs are how rollovers happen. These are skills that build fast, but they build fastest alongside someone who already has them.
