Abu Dhabi to Liwa: Into the Empty Quarter

Liwa is where the UAE runs out and the Empty Quarter begins — the Rub’ al Khali, the largest continuous sand desert on Earth. Drive a couple of hours south of Abu Dhabi and the scattered towns give way to dunes the size of hills. This is the desert at its most serious and most beautiful, and it needs a proper 4×4.

The drive south

From Abu Dhabi the route runs southwest and then south, through Madinat Zayed and on toward the Liwa oasis crescent. The roads are excellent and fast, and the landscape changes as you go: from flat gravel plains to the first low dunes, then to the towering ridges that define Liwa itself. Fuel up before the final stretch — stations thin out as you head into the desert — and carry plenty of water. Phone signal can drop in the deeper dune areas, so tell someone your plan.

This is a long, open highway drive, so a comfortable, well-cooled vehicle makes a real difference. If you are coming from Dubai rather than the capital, it is a natural extension of a trip that takes in Abu Dhabi itself first.

Moreeb Dune (Tal Mireb)

The landmark everyone aims for is Moreeb Dune, also called Tal Mireb — a vast slope rising to roughly 300 m that ranks among the tallest dunes in the country. Its steep face is famous for hill-climb events, where cars and bikes charge straight up. Even if nothing is running, standing at the base and looking up gives you a real sense of scale. Climbing it on foot is a genuine effort in soft sand, so save energy and go early or late in the day.

Dune driving — do it right

If you plan to leave the road, treat the dunes with respect. The basics that keep people safe out here:

• Deflate your tyres to spread the contact patch — soft sand swallows fully inflated tyres. Reinflate before you return to tarmac.
• Never go alone. Travel with at least one other vehicle so you can recover each other if you get stuck, and carry a tow rope and a board.
• Carry more water than you think you need, plus a hat, sunscreen and a charged phone.
• Know your limits. If you have never driven dunes, do not learn on Moreeb. Stick to the firmer edges or go with an experienced group.

Qasr Al Sarab and staying over

Liwa deserves more than a rushed day trip, and the obvious way to stay is Qasr Al Sarab, a desert resort built to look like a fort rising out of the dunes. Even if you are not staying, it is the classic place to watch the sun set over an endless sea of sand, with the light turning the ridges deep orange and the shadows stretching for miles. An overnight lets you catch both sunset and the extraordinary quiet after dark, when the sky fills with stars.
