Dubai to Musandam: The Fjords of Arabia (Oman)

Musandam is the peninsula where the Hajar Mountains drop straight into the sea, carving inlets that people call the Fjords of Arabia. It belongs to Oman, so this is a genuine cross-border trip — passport in hand — but the reward is one of the most dramatic coastlines in the region, a few hours from Dubai.

First, the honest part: crossing into Oman

Khasab, the main town in Musandam, is in Oman, and the drive there crosses an international border. Take this seriously and it is straightforward; ignore it and your trip ends at the checkpoint.

None of this is meant to put you off — thousands of people do the run every season — but Musandam is not a trip to improvise. Get the documents right first, then enjoy the drive.

The road to Khasab

From Dubai you head north up the coast, past Ras Al Khaimah, to the border at Tibat. Once you clear it, the road to Khasab is the highlight of the drive: a coastal route with the mountains on one side and the Strait of Hormuz on the other, curving around bays with the water an intense blue. It is well surfaced but winding in places, so take it steadily and enjoy the views rather than the pace.

Best car for this drive

A comfortable SUV suits Musandam best — it handles the winding coastal road with ease, gives you ground clearance for the mountain track up to Khor Najd, and has the space for a full day out. Make sure Oman cross-border cover is arranged before you collect it.

A dhow cruise through the fjords

The classic Musandam experience is a day cruise on a traditional wooden dhow. Boats leave from Khasab harbour and drift through the inlets — sheer rock walls rising from calm water, with quiet coves where you can stop to swim and snorkel. Dolphins often ride the bow wave, and the still, cliff-lined water is unlike anything on the UAE side of the mountains.

Most cruises pass Telegraph Island, a small rock in Khor Ash Sham that once held a British telegraph relay station in the 19th century — the isolation there is said to have given the English phrase “going round the bend” a very literal origin. It is a good spot for a swim and a bit of history in one stop.

Khor Najd and the mountain viewpoint

If you have a capable vehicle and some driving confidence, the track up to the Khor Najd viewpoint is worth it. A steep, graded mountain road climbs to a lookout over a hooked bay far below — one of the best land-based views in Musandam. The final descent to the water’s edge is steep and better suited to a proper 4×4; if in doubt, enjoy the view from the top and turn around.

Where this fits with your other trips

Musandam pairs naturally with the northern emirates. Many people combine it with a night in Ras Al Khaimah rather than driving straight back — see our perfect weekend in Ras Al Khaimah. And if this whets your appetite for driving into Oman properly, the longer haul to the capital is covered in Dubai to Muscat: the big Oman road trip, which involves the same passport-and-insurance planning on a bigger scale.

FAQ

Do I need a passport for Musandam?

Yes. Musandam is part of Oman, so everyone in the car needs a valid passport and the correct Oman visa for their nationality. An Emirates ID is not enough.

Can I take a rental car into Oman?

Only with the rental company’s written permission and insurance valid in Oman. Arrange both before your trip — message us in advance so the cross-border paperwork is ready.

How long does the drive take?

Around 2.5–3 hours of driving to Khasab, plus time at the border crossing, which can add a while depending on queues.

Is Musandam a day trip or overnight?

It can be done in a long day, but many travellers stay a night in Khasab or combine it with Ras Al Khaimah to make the border time worthwhile.
