Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah & Jebel Jais, the UAE’s Roof

North of Dubai the coast gives way to the highest mountains in the country. Jebel Jais rises to nearly 1,934 metres, reached by a ribbon of smooth tarmac that switchbacks up the rock — one of the best driving roads in the UAE, ending in air a good ten degrees cooler than the city you left.

Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah

The run up to Ras Al Khaimah is easy and quick — roughly 115 km of open highway, often under 1.5 hours from central Dubai. RAK itself is a relaxed emirate of beaches, mangroves and old forts, and it makes a fine base if you want more than a day. But most drivers come with one target in mind: the mountain road beyond the city.

Fill up in RAK before you start climbing. There is no fuel on the mountain, phone signal drops in places, and you want a full tank and plenty of water on board. As always, Salik gates on the Dubai side charge AED 4 per automatic pass; the mountain road itself is toll-free.

The Jebel Jais driving road

This is the star. From the base, a wide, immaculately engineered road climbs the mountain in a series of long sweepers and tight hairpins, with viewpoints and laybys cut into the rock where you can stop and look back over the range. It is not a race track — it is camera-monitored, patrolled and shared with cyclists and coaches — but as a scenic mountain drive it has few rivals in the region.

Take it steadily. The gradients are real, the drops beside the barriers are serious, and the reward is in the views, not the pace. Aim to reach the upper viewpoints in the late afternoon so you can watch the light change across the peaks.

Jais Sky Tour — the world’s longest zipline

Strapped in face-down, you fly across the mountains on what is billed as the world’s longest zipline, reaching serious speed above the valley. It is the headline attraction and it needs booking ahead, as slots and weight limits apply and weather can close it. Even if you do not fly, the launch area is a spectacular viewpoint.

Jais Sledder and the viewpoints

Gentler thrills come from the Jais Sledder, a toboggan-style track that snakes down the mountainside — good fun for mixed-age groups and far less daunting than the zipline. Between activities, the terraced viewpoints are the real pleasure: bring a jacket, buy a coffee, and watch the shadows lengthen across the Hajar range.

Sunset and the drive down

Jebel Jais is famous for sunset, and for good reason — the whole range turns gold and then violet. Just plan the descent with care. Driving mountain hairpins in the dark demands full attention, so use low gears to save your brakes, keep your lights on, and take it slowly. If you would rather not drive down in the dark, start back while there is still light on the road.
